An Atomistically-informed Energy Based Theory of Environmentally Assisted Failure

چکیده
The critical energy release rate defined as Gc = 2γ + γp (where, γ is the cohesive energy and γp is the plastic work) is widely used as a macroscopic fracture criterion. During embrittlement of Aluminum by Gallium, impurity segregation is localized to a small region along the grain boundary and the bulk plastic properties is unaffected. Yet, the critical energy release rate (which is predominantly described by the plastic work (γp) since γp >>γp ) significantly decreases. In this work, we recognize that as the cohesive energy (γ) decreases during corrosion due to increase in impurity concentration, the stress needed at the notch tip to form the crack decreases, and this in turn, decreases the plastic work by reducing dislocation emission at the notch tip. We study two different models proposed in the past that can capture this dependence of γp on γ during liquid metal (Ga) embrittlement of Aluminum alloy (Al 7075). The parameters in these models are computed from first principles atomistic calculations and recent experiments. We compare and contrast these models on their ability to describe various aspects of embrittlement such as fracture toughness, KIC and subcritical value of stress intensity, KIscc. Extension of the approach to predict threshold fatigue crack initiation in Al7075 is suggested.

Synthesis and Characterization of Colloidal Nanosilica via an Ultrasound Assisted Route Based on Alkali Leaching of Silica Fume
Colloidal nanosilica is currently being produced by various methods which are mainly high energy intensive and/or not environmentally friendly. It is therefore essential to develop new energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technologies. This paper introduces a new ultrasound assisted route based on alkali leaching of silica fume for synthesis of colloidal silica nanoparticles. The ef...
متن کاملCrystal plasticity model for BCC iron atomistically informed by kinetics of correlated kinkpair nucleation on screw dislocation
The mobility of dislocation in body-centered cubic (BCC) metals is controlled by the thermally activated nucleation of kinks along the dislocation core. By employing a recent interatomic potential and the Nudged Elastic Band method, we predict the atomistic saddle-point state of 1=2〈111〉 screw dislocation motion in BCC iron that involves the nucleation of correlated kinkpairs and the resulting ...
متن کاملIranian EFL Learners’ Perception of the Efficacy and Affordance of Activity Theory-based Computer Assisted Language Learning in Writing Achievement
Second language writing instruction has been greatly influenced by the growing importance of technology and the recent shift of paradigm from a cognitive to a social orientation in second language acquisition (Lantolf & Thorne, 2006). Therefore, the applications of computer assisted language learning and activity theory have been suggested as a promising framework for writing studies. The prese...
متن کاملAnalysis of the elastic strain energy driving force for grain boundary migration using phase field simulation
We investigate elastic energy-driven grain boundary migration in a strained copper bicrystal using an atomistically informed phase field model. In a bicrystal experiencing a uniform strain, the softer grain has a lower energy density and grows at the expense of the harder grain. In a bicrystal experiencing heterogeneous strain, the softer grain has a higher energy density, yet it still grows. O...
متن کاملPerceptual Learning Style Preferences and Computer-Assisted Writing Achievement within the Activity Theory Framework
Learning styles are considered among the significant factors that aid instructors in deciding how well their students learn a second or foreign language (Oxford, 2003). Although this issue has been accepted broadly in educational psychology, further research is required to examine the relationship between learning styles and language learning skills. Thus, the present study was carried out to in...
